There are many different styles of Hatha Yoga that have developed over the centuries and this number then exploded dramatically in the western world following Yoga's rise in popularity over the last 50 years. B.K.S Iyengar, is widely regarded as the most influential individual in this development. At ninety years old he still lives and teaches in Pune, India while the yoga that carries his name is the most widely practiced in the world.

Iyengar Yoga is characterized by rigorous attention to anatomical detail, adaptable sequencing and the use of 'props'(blocks, belts blankets etc) in both active and supported poses. In this manner people of all fitness levels can access the full benefits of physically demanding classic yoga poses (asana) and breathing exercises (pranayama). Iyengar Yoga teachers are comprehensively trained over a number of years to international standards and are answerable to a stringent certification process. Governed in Australia by the B.K.S.Iyengar Yoga Association of Australia (BKSIYAA) only fully certified teachers may use the name 'Iyengar' and display the 'Certification Mark'
